A functional movement class works to get your body moving in all planes, with all joints moving well. We are such a sedentary society that from a very young age, we start to lose natural movements and settle into poor postural patterns that can lead to pain, injury and less and less movement over time.
i can't get down to the floor(or up from the floor), can i do a yoga or movement class?
Absolutely! Choose our "Yoga For All" class and we will show you how to adapt every pose for your body. You can practice in a chair, wheelchair, with a walker, on a ball or against a wall. The beauty of this class is that you will learn how to adapt all poses for your body so that you can practice on your own or join just about any class once you know the adaptations.
do i have to disrobe for a massage treatment?
While skin on skin contact is generally most beneficial, you do not have to disrobe if it makes you uncomfortable. One big difference between Massage Therapy and other health care options is that YOU are always in control of the treatment. If you are uncomfortable, at any time, you can stop or alter a treatment. Informed consent is a very important part of any treatment and that means that you can withdraw your consent to any part of a treatment at any time.
how does the BS brace work?
The nail technician is able to correct and remedy the abnormal curvature of the nail with the use of the revolutionary B/S Brace procedure, developed by the Berndt Stolz Company in Germany. The system was developed as a non-surgical solution for painful toenails over 25 years ago by the German chiropodist Berndt Stolz. The system has evolved into a modern day nail treatment that is not only easy to apply but safe for all clients including diabetics and seniors. Nail bracing results in the elimination or reduction of excessive pressure of the nail, in the nail groove. The tension of the brace changes the shape of the abnormally curved nail back to its original, natural shape. The greater the distance between the nail and the brace (see figure 1 and 2) prior to application, the greater the tension asserted to the nail. This is accomplished with the use of a fiberglass-enhanced Duroplast brace. The B/S Brace technique is applied to toenails that are prone to being ingrown or involuted, causing pressure or discomfort to the client. It can take as little time as one day to bring relief, and over a period of several months, can correct the problem.
what is shinrinyoku?
Shinrinyoku is Japanese for “forest bathing”. At Thrive, Shinrinyoku involves a silent walk through the forest, carefully cultivating natural movement for a full body and soul workout. Studies show that breathing in phytonicides(essential oils from trees) can be good for your health. The practice of spending time in the forest has become a commonplace therapy for stress and lowered immune systems in Japan and many studies have been published showing the positive effects on both the immune system response and blood pressure. It is essentially natural aromatherapy(breathing in phyonicides) combined with natural movement therapy. The trails through the woods are groomed for walking but do not expect a perfectly smooth and easy walking surface! Natural movement involves rambling up and over obstacles, working the tissues and joints in our feet and legs to move us safely along the trail. Using your arms to help move yourself along the trail is recommended for a full body workout and there are plenty of areas to stop and stretch your upper body out on a tree limb too! Walking poles are available for those who need extra support though a goal of working towards not needing this assistance is recommended. Silence is recommended so that you can listen to the song of the birds, the soughing of the wind through the trees and so that you can focus on your breath and/or mantra for your walk. A water bottle is recommended and a yoga mat/towel if you have one. Carrying these items in a healthy way can become part of your workout. We pause at the top of the hill for some yoga asana and relaxing breath work before rambling back down the trail.
